Distinctly
modern, active and productive and located on the
main North-South route through Europe, Valence is
a very pleasant holiday stop-over which provides
a taster of the Midi region, and is definitely worth
a visit.
It has managed to preserve its memories, which are
etched in the stone of the old streets through which
pedestrians can slowly amble and discover the rich
cultural and historical heritage awaiting them.
This city lies in remembrance to the young artillery
lieutenant Napoleon Bonaparte and has a museum housing
the red chalk drawings of Hubert Robert. It is also
an architectural city, as the sculpted façade
of the Maison des Têtes shows.
As is so often true of regions in France, the cuisine
of Valence reflects its spirit. Stroll through the
Povençal market on a Saturday morning in
place des Clercs, as it is also the ideal starting
point for a number of excursions, being just a stone's
throw from Vercors, passing through Chabeuil, Peyrus
and the col des Limouches.
