AOC wines in Drôme

The Côtes du Rhône wines from the Hermitage en St Joseph destination have received the national distinction 'Vineyards and discoveries' created in 2009. Located around the famous hills of the Hermitage, it is located in the center of the northern part of the Côtes of the Rhône and highlights three emblematic grape varieties: Syrah (red), Marsanne (white) and Roussane (white). These grape varieties are promoted through legendary appellations: Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, St Joseph.

The AOP Saint-Joseph wine

The AOC Saint-Joseph extends over twenty-six municipalities on the right bank of the Rhône, spread over a narrow strip of terroirs over approximately 60 km, along a north-south axis. So it is not surprising to note a relative diversity in the typicality of Saint-Joseph. The appellation is the link between the AOC condrieu and côte-rôtie in the north, and that of cornas in the south. On the hillside, facing the slope of the Hermitage, the vineyard is planted on land of granite, gneiss, mica schists, supported by low walls. It is at the origin of soft or solid and powerful red wines according to their origin, and of racy white wines.

The AOC Crozes-Hermitagewine

To the north and south of Tain-l'Hermitage, the Crozes-Hermitage vines surround the Hermitage appellation. In this vast, relatively flat area, the area of the growing vineyard is today practically equivalent to that of peach trees.

The different geological outcrops bring a certain diversity to the wines; the syrah grape reigns supreme in fruity red wines, while marsanne, a large white grape variety, produces fresh and pleasant wines to drink.

The tannins are round, well integrated in these red wines of semi-guard which have smoothness, substance, elegance and reserve. Crozes-Hermitage have less tannic power than Hermitage, but more flexibility from a young age.

The AOC Hermitage Wine

North-east of Tain-l'Hermitage, on the left bank of the Rhône, the Hermitage vineyard clings to a magnificent steep hillside where the names of renowned merchants, such as Jaboulet and Chapoutier, are inscribed.

Already famous in Roman times, it owes even more its fame to a legendary knight who, returning from the Crusades, retired near the Hermitage chapel and planted vines there. Syrah gives birth to fabulous red wines for aging. White wines are also capable of evolving over several years. The AOC also supplies confidential volumes of straw wine.
